Abstract

Thirty common buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench.) varieties were cultivated at the experimental site of Terranova del Pollino for two running years (2008 and 2009) and assessed for grain yield and rutin content.; In both years, higher yields were associated with the first sowing time, with several varieties proving good yielder between 1.5t/ha and 2.0t/ha, independently from the geographic origin of the investigated material.; Early sowing appeared to produce a positive effect on grain rutin content as well.; Furthermore, European varieties, as a group, showed a higher content for this specific trait compared to those originating from the Pacific Area (Canada and Japan).; Taking into account only the first sowing date, within which in both years the best grain yield and rutin content results were obtained, varieties Luba and Panda showed the best compromise between these two traits, always ranking among the top performers.; In general the grain yield and rutin content appeared not to be correlated, almost as if grain development and rutin accumulation were not competing processes. Only in the case of one sowing time (the first of 2009) did the two parameters seemed to be lightly correlated (R 2=0.6). © 2018 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
