Qualification
Degree in Biological Science (University of Rome La Sapienza, 1989)
Ph.D. in Ecology and Management of Living Resources (University of Tuscia, Viterbo 2008)
Course: "On The Use Of The Sterile Insect and Related Techniques For The Area-Wide Managemen of Insect Pests." organized by FAO / IAEA  joint Division International Gainesville, University of Florida, USA  May-June, 1996
Commitment to scientific research
1. Study of predator-prey and  host-parasitoid systems. Within the complex  biocenotic of different agro-ecosystems (Mediterranean greenhouses, olive groves) population dynamics of species linked by trophic interactions  has been studied to determine the impact  of biotic and abiotic factors on population number in a state natural  and in artificial environments (climate chambers).
2. Development of the sterile insect (SIT) to control pest insect species belonging to  aleyrodidae, Tephritidae, and Culicidae (Aedes albopictus). Gamma ray dosimetry and experimental application of  the SIT has been carried out against aleyrodidae species and the asian tiger mosquito under confined environments. The effects of radiation sterilization  on vector capabilities of some insect species transmitting  plant viruses (Bemisia tabaci, TYLCV) has been assessed.
3. Cytoplasmic incompatibility induced by the Wolbachia symbiont  bacterium  and its potential application  in genetic control of vector pest is going to be exploited  in agricultural  and medical Entomology by  establishing  artificial new  infections in hosts by embrionic microinjection   (Ceratitis capitata, Bactrocera oleae, Aedes albopictus).
4. Physiological, molecular and evolutionary relationship between the symbiotic bacterium Wolbachia and its insect hosts range from studies of reproductive biology to analysis  of transcrittomes an proteomes associated with the bacterium-insect interaction.
Teaching
Assistant Supervisor of thesis, tutor of scholarships and research grants and State supervision of the International PhD course in "Insect Biotechnology" XX cycle.
Position
Currently Senior Scientist  at ENEA at the Laboratory "Sustainable management of agro-ecosystem." In 2002 he was appointed scientific head of a PON project on agro-industry thematic area  to improve quality and competitiveness of  typical Mediterranean food chains (olive oil, leguminous  and brassicace). In 2009 he was co-author of a patent ENEA for the development of a sterilization process of the asian tiger mosquito  Aedes albopictus males achieved  through altering the pattern of Wolbachia infection in females. He is currently involved  the project BIOMOS (EurotransBio 2010) funded  to develop new biotechnological tools  to control  the asian tiger mosquito in Italy.H
Co-author of about 90 scientific publications and a referee for several scientific journals (Trends in Parasitology, Entomology et experimentalis applied, Journal of Insect Behaviour and Molecular Ecology). In 2009 he was co-author of an ENEA patent for the development of a sterilization process of the asian tiger mosquito Aedes albopictus males achieved through altering the pattern of Wolbachia infection in females.
